Successful International Workshop on Makerspaces for Lecturers, Researchers, Students, and SMEs at Samara University, Ethiopia
The EtD-FaM (Ethiopian Djibouti Females at Makerspaces) project hosted a highly impactful International Workshop on Makerspaces at Samara University, Ethiopia. The workshop brought together key stakeholders from Ethiopian universities, industries, and international partners to foster innovation, collaboration, and skills development.
The event kicked off with an inspiring opening speech by Dr. Muhammed Usman, President of Samara University, and featured distinguished guests from the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, including Dr. Eba Mijena, Director of Academic Affairs, and Dr. Serawit Handiso, Head of Research and Extension. They underscored the importance of collaboration between academia and industry for the long-term success of the project and highlighted the Ministry’s unwavering support.
Special remarks were also delivered by Dr. Fikadu Mitiku, President of Arsi University, and Dr. Ubah Adem, President of Dire Dawa University, who emphasized the project’s pivotal role in advancing Ethiopian Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS). Their commitment to continued collaboration with European partners was evident, ensuring the project’s sustainability and lasting impact.
Throughout the workshop, the EtD-FaM project coordinator and European partners provided a comprehensive overview of the project’s milestones. Engaging discussions followed, focusing on strategies for integrating makerspaces into Ethiopian universities to empower students—especially female students—and promote entrepreneurial initiatives.
An additional highlight was the presentation of the #FAITH project
Coordinated by Kotebe University, which offered valuable lessons for the establishment of applied sciences-focused universities in Ethiopia, complementing the goals of EtD-FaM.
The workshop concluded with a unified commitment from all stakeholders to advancing innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaborative efforts between Ethiopian universities, industries, and international partners.
